Brief History

The Still Pond and Betterton churches are integral parts of the Methodist heritage in Kent County, Maryland. While specific historical records about these individual congregations are limited, their association with the broader Methodist movement provides context to their significance.

Methodism, founded by John Wesley in the 18th century, emphasized personal faith, social justice, and community outreach. The movement spread rapidly across the United States, including Maryland, where numerous congregations were established to serve both urban and rural communities.

In Kent County, the Methodist presence was organized into circuits—a group of churches served by itinerant ministers. The Still Pond Circuit, which included churches in Still Pond and Betterton, was part of the Chestertown District under the Delaware Annual Conference. Between 1886 and 1889, under the leadership of Rev. James H. Mason, efforts were made to rebuild and strengthen these congregations. Rev. Mason successfully raised $1,849 for the construction of new church buildings within the circuit, which were collectively valued at $6,000 upon completion.

Today, the Still Pond and Betterton churches continue to serve their communities, upholding the Methodist traditions of worship, fellowship, and service. They offer regular worship services and maintain a commitment to outreach, reflecting the enduring legacy of Methodism in the region.
